What is the Eysenck personality test (Extroversion/Introversion)?

The Eysenck Personality Test or Eysenck personality inventory (EPI) is a psychological assessment developed by Hans and Sybil Eysenck. This tool measures the two original traits described in the personality theory of Hans Eysenck, These are extraversion and neuroticism. These two 24-item measures were supplemented by a 9-item Lie scale in an attempt to guard against various concerns about response style. Both of these aspects were introduced (and since emphasized) as temperamental aspects of personality that are inherited and evident at birth.

The EPI was developed in 1964 based on a conceptualization of personality that identifies extraversion and neuroticism as the two primary and independent factors comprising the global construct of personality.

The EPQ was introduced as a substantial revision to the EPI in 1975 and a further revision was published in 1985.

It is used to measure introversion, extroversion, and neuroticism like the EPI. This time a new aspect was added; psychoticism.

 

What is the difference between EPI and EPQ?

The main difference in the EPQ is the addition of a fourth scale, the ‘P’ scale, to the three scales of the most recent version (the EPI). The E, N, and P scales each represent one of the dimensions in Eysenck’s theory. Please note that the L scale does not directly measure personality.

What does an Eysenck test measure (Instruction)?

The EPI measures Extraversion-Introversion, and Neuroticism-Stability, which account for most of the variance in the personality domain. Each form contains 57 “Yes-No” items with no repetition of items. The inclusion of a falsification scale provides for the detection of response distortion. The traits measured are Extraversion-Introversion and Neuroticism. When you fill out Eysenck’s Personality Inventory (EPI) you get three scores.

  • The lie score is out of 9. It measures how socially desirable you are trying to be in your answers. Those who score 5 or more on this scale are probably trying to make themselves look good and are not being totally honest in their responses.
  • The E score is out of 24 and measures how much of an extrovert you are.
  • The N score is out of 24 and measures how neurotic you are.

To interpret the scores, your E score and your N score are plotted on a graph from which you can read your personality characteristics. The nearer the outside of the circle you are, the more marked are the personality traits. Please note that the EPI is a very simplistic type of personality measurement scale, so if you have come out as a personality that does not match what you thought before you took the test, you are probably right and the test is probably wrong!
